Sydney has announced that it plans to shift fully to renewable energy, in order to cut its greenhouse gas emissions. The Australian city wants to meet all its electricity needs with renewable energy, so it will only purchase energy that is generated by wind or solar.
Sydney has always taken the transition to renewable energy seriously: the city currently has a 50% renewable electricity target by 2030, and a target to reduce greenhouse gas emissions by 70% by 2030. The city’s existing energy contract is about to expire, and the city administration decided to dive “head first into Sydney’s renewable future”, increasing its renewable electricity target to 100%.
“We’re increasing our renewable electricity target and achieving it earlier because our residents and businesses are demanding it, it reduces emissions and it will soon be cheaper than coal”, Sydney’s sustainability director, Chris Derksema said. “The shift to renewable electricity is happening much faster than anyone imagined. We’re leading by example, with the hope of inspiring local residents and businesses to take action themselves.
