China is planning to build the world’s first solar power station in space in order to have access to “inexhaustible clean energy for humans”. Researchers at the China Academy of Space Technology claim they are already testing the technology, according to reports.
Chinese media reported that a space power station could reliably provide energy 99% of the time, without seasonal and night-time loss of sunlight.
The test site is currently under construction in the city of Chongqing. The goal is to start the construction of the actual solar power station by 2030, and build it by 2050, according to an article in the Sydney Morning Herald.
