The market for PPAs (Power Purchase Agreements) in Switzerland is still emerging compared to other European countries, with only a few transactions publicly known so far. However, the Federal Act on a Secure Electricity Supply from Renewable Energy Sources is expected to significantly boost the market size in the coming years.

The energy demand in Europe has structurally changed as a result of the historically high prices during 2022. Over the past two years, we have observed a 20% gas demand destruction and a 10% power demand destruction on the European markets. At the same time, we have seen a significant increase in renewable power generation installations and a recovery of French nuclear power production.

One of the most important events of 2024 on EU level will be this week’s European Parliamentary elections. The final outcome will shape the EU’s political direction over the next five years – and it will also have a strong impact on the continent’s energy supply and the green transition.
